San Diego City College celebrated the ceremonial grand opening of the new 98,000 gsf Science building this past week. San Diego Interim Mayor Todd Gloria (pictured above) addressed the audience of more than 100 in attendance. The building contains two wings configured in an L-shape with four stories of laboratory space for the physical and life sciences in one wing and 3 stories of general instructional classroom space and offices in the other wing. The building also contains a state-of-the-art digital planetarium for instructional purposes.
The building is on track for LEED Gold certification by the USGBC with many sustainable features. The HVAC system utilizes fan-wall technology to generate efficiency in a building type that is typically an energy hog. Harley Ellis Devereaux is the Architect of Record. Rudoph & Sletten was the construction manager on this project that was delivered via the multiple prime method. Key specialty trade contractors included TB Penick, Gould Electric, Alpha Mechanical and AO Reed. JE Moore Consulting was the campus project manager for San Diego Community College District.
